The NASCAR regular season begins Sunday with the Daytona 500, and this year’s edition of the Great American Race has plenty of storylines worth watching live.
Chase Elliott has captured his second consecutive pole position as the sensation returns for his sophomore season in the newly rebranded Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Will he be able to parlay that into a finish better than last year’s 37th place?
Starting alongside Elliott on the front row is his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr., who’s returning to his first regular season race since concussion symptoms sidelined him last summer. How will Dale Jr. fare getting back in the No. 88? He finished 36th in 2016 but he’s also won the race multiple times.
Meanwhile, last year’s Xfinity Series champion Daniel Suarez makes his NASCAR debut taking over for Carl Edwards, who decided to retire after last season. Expectations will be high for Suarez on a Joe Gibbs Racing team that showed strong in 2016. That includes Denny Hamlin, who was last year’s Daytona 500 winner.
And let’s not overlook Erik Jones, who’s also stepping up to a full-time Cup Series ride after being a super-sub last year, but still looks like he missed the bus to high school.
All of these drivers will be driving for their place in NASCAR history and a strong start to the new season, so you don’t want to miss the action as it happens.
