Consider Shane Doan as someone against the Arizona Coyotes trading Martin Hanzal.

The NHL trade deadline can be a rough time of year for hockey players. Sometimes, players have to say goodbye to good friends. Other times, they have to deal with being sellers and having a very certain future. Shane Doan, the captain of the Arizona Coyotes, isn’t usually one who gets too philosophical. But he went on a pretty epic rant when asked about the trade that sent his teammate Martin Hanzal to the Minnesota Wild.

Doan has a no movement clause. However, he has yet to express a desire to be traded from the only franchise he knows. Doan has been with the Coyotes franchise for their entire time in Arizona. It’s very rare to find a player these days who spends his entire career with one franchise. Doan will most likely join the exclusive club.

His rant says a lot of things. It gives fans a glimpse of what it’s like to say goodbye to a teammate who has been around for a while. Doan is very good friends with him. However, he says something interesting when he notes he doesn’t understand. That’s a little weird. It’s completely understandable why the Coyotes traded Hanzal. They’re in 29th place in the NHL. Moreover, Hanzal is a free agent after this season. Trading him clearly makes the Coyotes better.

As tough as it is for Arizona, trading Hanzal is the right decision. Doan has to understand that. It’s admirable to see a player so committed to a team that he doesn’t want to go anywhere else despite never getting a chance to win a Stanley Cup. Doan’s going down as arguably the best player in Coyotes history. This is a good summary about why.
