NHL Trade: Canadiens acquire Jordie Benn from Stars
By Josh Hill
In a somewhat stunning move, the Dallas Stars have broken up the Benn brothers by shipping the elder Jordie to Montreal.
The Montreal Canadiens just keep getting better. After swapping out head coach Michele Therrien for Claude Julien, the Habs are making deals ahead of Wednesday’s trade deadline.
Montreal got together with the Dallas Stars to swap Jordie Benn for Greg Pattern and a fourth-round pick. It’s am over the strengthens the Hab defense while also making it known to the rest of the Eastern Conference that they’re knocking on the door come playoff time.
The full details of the trade were announced on Monday:
The deal means that the Habs push for a Stanley Cup this year is as measured as it has been in recent seasons. Montreal, mirroring moves being made by the Minnesota Wild, are gearing up for a run at the Cup and nothing less, something this Benn trade is a clear reflection of.
Montreal currently sits as the fifth bet team in the East while leading the Atlantic Division by two-points over Ottawa. The Senators also made a deal on Wednesday to acquire Alex Burrows from the Canucks, a move made to try and help catch the Habs before the season comes to a close in a month.
From Dallas, who sits in sixth place above the lowly Colorado Avalanche in the Central Division, this trade was made for other reasons. The best team in the West last season has struggled to reclaim the dominance it held last season and while the playoffs aren’t out of the question yet it’s not looking promising.
Breaking up the Benn brothers is a sad end to an era in Dallas but one that the team is hoping at least helped acquire assets to turn things around in the near future.
