Who is the best MLB player from each state?
Massachusetts: Tom Glavine
Massachusetts has produced over 600 big leaguers, but not so many in recent years. There are only 11 current MLB players from the state, and only one of them has even been to an All-Star Game. Massachusetts does, however, get to hang another plaque in the Hall of Fame this summer, with native son Jeff Bagwell entering the Hall of Fame with the 2017 class.
There are three 300-game winners from Massachusetts, but two of them, Tim Keefe and John Clarkson, played their entire careers before 1900. Tom Glavine won 305 games from 1987 to 2008, and is the pick for best player to come out of Massachusetts. He was also an NHL draft pick, which only reinforces his status as a native of the state.
With the Atlanta Braves, Glavine was a part of one of the best rotations in baseball history. He may have been a touch behind teammate Greg Maddux, but he did lead the league in wins five times and won two Cy Youngs. Glavine also appeared in five different World Series. Though the Braves only won one, you can hardly blame Glavine for their shortcomings. He finished his career with a 2.16 ERA in 58.1 innings in the Fall Classic.
