The New York Jets are departing from Revis island
The New York Jets were once one of the NFL’s most fearsome defenses. With Darrelle Revis patrolling the air they were able to shut down an entire side of the field. This side eventually gained the nickname Revis Island thanks to Revis’s ability to singlehandedly shutdown opposing wide receivers. However, as Revis demanded more money the Jets eventually chose to leave Revis island behind for a new tropical destination. Eventually, they returned hopeful for some fun in the sun on those familiar beaches.
Sadly, as with most things in life, the second time around didn’t go as well. Revis Island had lost some of the shine that it had during their first stay, and this has led New York to the tough decision to depart from Revis Island once again. This time, permanently. In Revis’s 10-year career, eight have been with New York with only a short two year stint on different teams.
Revis is still for the most part a capable corner, but he’s nowhere near the fearsome defender he once was. His time with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Bucs proved as much when he only lasted one season on both teams. It wasn’t the worst idea for Revis to return back to where he made his name and try to re-capture some of that former glory, but his skills have regressed too far. The money New York was putting into Revis just wasn’t worth the return they were getting on him.
Despite being cut, Revis has nothing but kind words for his now former team.
It will be interesting to see what this means for Revis’s career. He’s not the same player he once was, but on a cheaper contract he should still be a corner teams can expect quality production from. However, with the NFL always looking for the next young stud this could begin the end of Revis career.
