The America East Conference Tournament, which uses a rare re-seeding format, will get underway on Wednesday.

Before the start of the Big Dance in two weeks, March Madness truly gets underway with mid-major conference tournaments around the nation.

One of the more entertaining smaller conference tournaments should be the America East, which features a few intriguing storylines. The eight-team America East Tournament also uses a rare re-seeing format, with the higher remaining seed earning home court advantage at every stage.

Vermont will enter the tournament as the heavy favorite after putting together an undefeated run in conference play. The Catamounts will be a trendy pick to score a first round upset in the NCAA Tournament if they can win the championship game on March 11 and will have home court advantage all the way through.

Defending champion Stony Brook, which beat Vermont in last year’s title game, will also be in the mix after earning a No. 2 seed, although it no longer has star Jameel Warney.  Fifth-seeded UMBC also kept within single digits of the Catamounts in both meetings, joining the Seawolves as the only team to do so.

Albany will look to return to the NCAA Tournament from its third-seeded position after winning the conference three straight times between 2013 and 2015.  The America East features three teams with no March Madness appearances in Maine, Hartford and New Hampshire, although each one faces a difficult road to the title game.

Bubble teams will be rooting for Vermont just in case the committee decides its profile (26-5, No. 49 RPI) is good enough for an at-large bid, but that’s an outside shot at best.
