Ubisoft has revealed that Massive Entertainment, developer of The Division, is working on a new Avatar game.

On Tuesday, it was revealed by Ubisoft that a new Avatar game is being made. It’ll be a collaboration between Massive Entertainment (The Division), Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox Interactive. Check out IGN for more information.

Avatar is a fantastic film. It’s currently the highest grossing film ever and visually, it’s second to none. We aren’t sure how well it’ll transition into a video game, though.

Back in 2009, a game was released based on the film. It wasn’t completely terrible, but it wasn’t a game that anybody wanted or needed. We’re leaning toward feeling the same way about this project.

So far, video game film adaptations have been failures more often than not, and the same could be said about movie adaptations of video games. The two mediums simply haven’t proven to be very compatible over the past few decades — but maybe Massive can succeed where others have not.

Check out the announcement trailer below:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a diamond in the rough. It’s actually better than the film. Other than that, every other game is pretty terrible. You can look at the Fantastic Four games for proof.

Seeing how wrong this could go, we’re still cautiously optimistic. We’re huge fans of the film. Based on the lore and the world of Avatar, it has tons of potential to be a solid video game entry.

The Division was a fun and interesting game. It does have its problems, though, which we hope aren’t some of the same problems we’ll find in Avatar.

One thing we know for sure is visually, the game will look spectacular thanks to the Massive Snowdrop game engine.

It also helps that director James Cameron is lending a hand in development. In our eyes, he can do no wrong.
