Donovan Mitchell

SG, Louisville

The Orlando Magic acquired this pick from the Toronto Raptors as a part of their deal for Serge Ibaka. It originally belonged to the Los Angeles Clippers.

In the modern NBA, it’s hard to have too many wings, but it’s difficult to find wings that can play both ends of the floor. Louisville’s Donovan Mitchell can do just that. The sophomore has revitalized his offensive game this season by developing his outside shot. He’s shooting 38.1 percent from deep after making just 25.0 percent of his 3s during his freshman campaign. The improvement has coincided with an improvement at the free throw line and will make him a much more valuable piece assuming it sustains. Mitchell needs to improve his finishing at the rim, though, to be a more well-rounded threat. He’s athletic, but is held back by his 6-foot-3 stature.

That size is also a limiting factor on the defensive end in some ways, but Mitchell has long arms to help make up for it. He’s excellent at creating turnovers by swiping at balls in passing lanes and should be able to defend either guard position at the next level.

Mitchell may not have great starter upside, but he projects to be a solid rotation player as a late first round pick.
