Lorenzo Alexander: 5 best fits in NFL free agency
Lorenzo Alexander is an interesting case as he hits the free agent market in 2017. How much can the veteran linebacker get?
Alexander is one of the most interesting cases in all of free agency. Alexander is 34 years old and was drafted in 2007. However, until last season, Alexander had 9 career sacks, 16 career starts and played for three different teams. Somehow, 2016 was much different than the first nine seasons of his career.
In 2016, Alexander put up 12.5 sacks and started all 16 games for the Buffalo Bills. A player who went from only being a starter because first round pick Shaq Lawson was injured ended up in the Pro Bowl. Still, the Bills have a new defensive coordinator and head coach. Alexander is now expecting some sort of pay for his breakout year, and very well may not come in Buffalo. So who is going to take a shot on the 34-year old breakout performer? Here are five teams who may.
5. Los Angeles Rams
The Rams are another team going through a coaching change. Wade Phillips runs a multiple defense, but it comes from a base 3-4. The Rams have been a 4-3 team to date, and with that will have to see some personnel changes. They do not have any edge players who have played off of the ball and will need to find somebody who has some experience in the new scheme.
Alexander can be a nice fit here because he does not have to be the future, but he can start next season. The best way for the Rams to fully make the change would be to draft scheme fits. Alexander can bring that player along, and doesn’t force the Rams to throw him into starting play immediately. He will come with little long term commitment and if the Rams can some production and a plethora of snaps, it is a win for both sides.
