2017 NFL Scouting Combine: Day 5 bench press results

Day 5 of the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine is in the books from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Here is how today’s invitees did at the bench press.

It wasn’t just an impressive day with the field work at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. While the 40-yard dash always impresses folks, the bench press is the other marquee event for many perspective NFL Draft picks.

On Saturday, Mar. 4, three position groups got to pump some iron as many times as they could with the 225-pound bench press. The defensive linemen, the linebackers, and the tight ends all got to show NFL talent evaluators how strong they are and how much stamina they have in the bench press.

Here is the how they did at the bench press in the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine:

Defensive Linemen

Five defensive linemen were able to put up over 30 reps at 225 pounds in the bench press. Auburn’s Carl Lawson led the way with an impressive 35 reps. Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett and Washington’s Elijah Qualls each put up 33 reps apiece. Youngstown State’s Derek Rivers and Stanford’s Solomon Thomas both put up 30 reps at the combine.

Eight defensive linemen weren’t able to complete 20 reps at 225 in the bench press. A few of those guys include LSU’s Davon Godchaux (18), Florida State’s Demarcus Walker (18), and Ohio’s Tarell Basham (15).

Nine defensive linemen didn’t bench press at the scouting combine. Notable absences from the event were Tennessee’s Derek Barnett, Florida Atlantic’s Trey Hendrickson and two Alabama players in Dalvin Tomlinson and Tim Williams.

Two linebackers were able to put up 25 or more reps at 225 pounds in the bench press at the scouting combine. Michigan’s Ben Gedeon led the way with 27. Wake Forest’s Marquel Lee put up a strong 25 reps at 225.

Two linebackers put up 15 reps at 225 or less. Vanderbilt’s Zach Cunningham managed only 15. How does this affect his draft stock? It hasn’t been a great combine for blue-chip inside linebackers. Colorado State’s Kevin Davis hoisted only 11 reps at 225.

Seven linebackers did not participate in the 225-pound bench press at the scouting combine. Notable absences from this particular event include Tennessee’s Jalen Reeves-Maybin and a pair of Alabama players in Ryan Anderson and Reuben Foster. Remember that Foster was sent home early from the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine for an argument he had with a hospital worker during his examination.

The two tight ends that did the best at the bench press were Oregon’s Pharaoh Brown and Ashland’s Adam Shaheen. They both put up 24 reps at 225. South Alabama’s Gerald Everett, Alabama’s O.J. Howard, and Drake’s Eric Saubert each had 22 reps.

Washington’s Darrell Daniels and Pittsburgh’s Scott Orndoff finished with the worst bench press mark of only 17 reps. Overall, the tight ends have been the most consistent position group at the bench press with a range of only seven reps.

There were three tight ends that did not lift at the scouting combine. They were Michigan’s Jake Butt, Toledo’s Michael Roberts, and Arkansas’ Jeremy Sprinkle.
