NFL Combine: John Ross unofficially breaks Chris Johnson’s 40 yard dash record (Video)
Washington wide receiver John Ross has unofficially shattered Chris Johnson’s 40 yard dash record.
One of the most important events at the NFL Combine is the 40 yard dash. Scouts love to see a player’s pure speed. Even though players rarely, if ever, run 40 yards in a straight line during a game, you can measure a player’s speed and explosiveness. Chris Johnson set a record with a 4.24 time at the 2008 NFL Combine. Entering this year’s combine, everyone knew John Ross from Washington had a chance at breaking it. He has unofficially done so with a time of 4.22.
While the time isn’t official yet, at least one team clocked him at under 4.2 seconds.
Ross is incredibly fast, so this isn’t too surprising. His speed is his best weapon and he put it on display many times during his career at the University of Washington. Even after tearing his ACL in 2015, Ross bounced back in 2016 with a career year. He had 81 receptions for 1,150 receiving yards and 17 receiving touchdowns. Ross also ran for a touchdown. He averaged over 14 yards per catch in 2016. Back in 2014, Ross averaged over 20 yards per catch. He’s also a dynamic returner, netting four return touchdowns in his three seasons.

NFL teams have to be drooling over Ross and his complete package. The league is defined by speed and few are faster than him. Ross has the potential to score every time he touches the ball. This should cause his draft stock to shoot up. However, keep in mind plenty of players have had an amazing 40 yard dash and went on to do virtually nothing in the NFL. Ross, however, could be an exception to that rule.
