San Francisco 49ers sign Jeremy Kerley to 3-year, $10.5M deal

The 49ers have begun work on rebuilding their offense by bringing back one of their wide receivers on a relatively cheap deal.
The San Francisco 49ers offense remains in shambles with myriad questions at quarterback. New head coach Kyle Shanahan has just seen the first step taken by a new 49ers front office, though. Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley has re-signed with the 49ers to a three-year contract worth $10.5 million. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter announced the 49ers’ latest transaction on Twitter.
Kerley has proven to be a complementary slot receiver throughout the majority of his career. He played his first season for the 49ers last year after leaving the New York Jets. Kerley set a career-high in receptions with 64, despite the 49ers’ lackluster passing offense. In addition, the 28-year-old receiver added three touchdown catches to his 2016 season.
The 49ers offense continued to be a shell of its former self under the watch of fired head coach Chip Kelly. The former Oregon head coach didn’t receive the fresh start he hoped for after leaving the Philadelphia Eagles. Shanahan offers a lot of excitement to a team looking to recapture the success they saw with Jim Harbaugh. The young head coach gained respect around the league for overseeing an Atlanta Falcons’ historic offense led by MVP quarterback Matt Ryan.
Unfortunately, the Falcons experienced the worst meltdown in Super Bowl history by blowing a 28-3 lead. However, there’s no denying Shanahan’s impact on Ryan’s remarkable improvement and the Falcons offense as a whole.

After leaving the defending NFC champions, Shanahan will get a fresh start with this squad. The 49ers have since moved on from the disappointing Colin Kaepernick and draft bust Blaine Gabbert. It remains to be seen whether the 49ers will ultimately pull the trigger on trading for Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins.
