LSU Tigers safety Jamal Adams views himself at the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Is he wrong in his logic or should he feel this way?

When he met with the media at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Sunday, March 5, LSU Tigers safety Jamal Adams didn’t back down about how he feels about his skill set as a defensive back.

Adams doesn’t think that Texas A&M Aggies defensive end Myles Garrett or North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Mitchell Trubisky should go No. 1 overall. He thinks he’s the guy that should be going first overall.

While he could have his reservations about playing for the dysfunctional Cleveland Browns, the team in possession of the No. 1 overall pick, Adams said the following at the podium on Sunday, “I feel like I’m the best guy in the draft. I feel like I should be the No. 1 overall pick.”

Adams would later add that this is how all top players in the draft should feel about themselves. Many draft boards have tabbed Adams as potentially a top-five pick. All five teams picking in the top-five (Cleveland, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans) could use some help in the secondary.

A problem with Adams thinking he could go No. 1 is the Browns will likely go with Garrett or draft a potential franchise quarterback. Cleveland could also trade out of the No. 1 spot to acquire more precious draft picks.

Another issue about potentially going No. 1 overall for Adams is the position he plays. When was the last time a safety went No. 1 overall? Exactly, as it has never happened. Adams and Hooker do compose a huge part of an impressive safety class, but it is still viewed as a tertiary position on most team’s draft boards. If Adams slips past the New Jets at No. 6, that would be really shocking.
