The 2017 Mid-American Conference Tournament may boast the most exciting player in college basketball. While Akron and Ohio have to be the favorites, neither is home to dynamo Marcus Keene. Keene plays for Central Michigan, a team that finished 6-12 in conference and garnered the 11 seed. That matches them up against Kent State, a team they beat in a thrilling 105-98 overtime win in which Keene scored 41 points. Keene and the Chippewas will have to make a cinderella run in order to make the NCAA Tournament, but that isn’t the only potential excitement in store here.

Akron and Ohio seem to be on a collision course set for the MAC Final. The two best teams and top seeds in the conference, Akron appears the better of the two with a 24-7 record, including 14-4 MAC. Ohio was just 19-10 and 11-7 in MAC play, but Kenpom has them rated the higher of the two teams. The Bobcats are 103rd in his adjusted efficiency and the Zips are 105th. The two played twice this year, once in January and once in February. They split the two games, with Akron winning 83-68 on January 17th and Ohio winning on 85-70 on February 4th.

You can’t count out battle-tested Western Michigan, though. They found themselves tied atop the MAC West division with an 11-7 conference record despite going just 15-15 overall. Their difficult non-conference schedule is to blame for that, though. They played both Villanova and UCLA, two of the best teams in the nation. The Broncos lost both games by double digits, but neither was a blowout with a combined margin of 25 points. Having played such stiff competition could be to their benefit as the going gets tough.
