The 2017 MEAC Tournament bracket, complete with a printable version to fill out at home
Looking back at recent history in March Madness, the MEAC has actually produced a number of quality lower-seeds and Cinderella teams. The Norfolk State Spartans and their upset of the Missouri Tigers in the 15-2 matchup in 2012 comes to mind. Meanwhile, teams like the Hampton Pirates have been to the Big Dance frequently. Thus, the 2017 MEAC Tournament could be the breeding ground for a dark horse.
Coming into the MEAC Tournament, the North Carolina Central Eagles have to be considered the favorites as the No. 1 seed. NC Central went 13-3 in conference play during the regular season, but they stand far above the rest of the league with a 22-8 record. However, they’ll still have plenty of stiff competition in Norfolk, VA.
For one, the team hosting the 2017 MEAC Tournament, the aforementioned Norfolk State, is far more dangerous than they might appear. A 15-15 overall record definitely doesn’t look threatening in the slightest. However, the fact that they played a tough non-conference schedule and managed a 12-4 mark in conference play speaks well to the their chances. Also in play is Hampton, who have long been in the mix at the top of the league.
Though the winner of the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament from the MEAC can’t expect a high seed, they’ve proven they’re a capable conference in terms of orchestrating upset. As such, the conference tourney could be quite important. With that in mind, here’s a look at the 2017 MEAC Tournament bracket. There’s plenty of parity in the 2017 MEAC Tournament, which should make for a fun brand of college basketball. All told, however, it’d be a shocker to not see NC Central, Norfolk State or Hampton celebrating their tournament berth come Saturday, March 11.
