FX’s The Americans returns with a tense season premiere and a new mission for Philip and Elizabeth. Here’s the synopsis for season 5, episode 1.
After wrecking all of our hearts last season FX‘s The Americans is back, and the spy game is about to get even more complicated for Philip and Elizabeth Jennings.
Season 5, episode 1 is called “Amber Waves,” and that is a phrase from “America the Beautiful.” But things are far from beautiful for Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell). They still have to parent Paige (Holly Taylor), who retains misgivings about her family’s real business.
Paige has ignored her father’s orders to stop seeing Matthew Beeman, and Matthew’s father Stan (Noah Emmerich) is wondering what exactly happened last year. With Martha vanished, Gaad killed, and his frenemy Oleg Burov (Costa Ronin) deciding to return to Russia, Stan is woefully short on allies. Where will he turn next in the FBI’s war on espionage?
The stakes are higher for everyone in season 5. It also happens to be The Americans‘ next to last season so anything could be possible as the series moves one step closer to its endgame. How far will Philip and Elizabeth go not only for their mission but for their family?
Here’s how FX officially describes the episode:
"As Philip and Elizabeth struggle to contain the risks from Paige’s growing relationship with Matthew Beeman, the Centre sends them on an operation unlike any they’ve ever had before, straining their family and marriage to its limits."

The Americans isn’t just starting a new season. It’s also moving to a new night and will air on Tuesdays after spending last season on Wednesdays. But no matter when it airs it’s going to keep us on the edge of our seats.
