Arsenal 1-5 Bayern Munich: Highlights and recap
Arsenal lost 5-1 to Bayern Munich at the Emirates on March 7. Here are all the highlights from the match.
That’s it, then. Arsenal’s Champions League campaign ends in the round of 16 for the seventh consecutive season, this time after a 10-2 aggregate thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich. The result of the tie was no real surprise, but Tuesday’s second leg did offer the Gunners an opportunity to play themselves back into some confidence after a difficult run.
They started well, too, taking the lead through Theo Walcott in an impressive first half, and putting a slightly disinterested Bayern under more pressure than they’d probably have liked. When Olivier Giroud went close with a header early in the second half, a comeback felt, if not likely, certainly not impossible.
But any hope Arsenal had of reaching the quarterfinals disappeared in the 53rd minute, when Laurent Koscielny pushed Robert Lewandowski in the box. The referee pointed to the spot and showed Koscielny a red card for the denial of a clear goal scoring opportunity. Lewandowski finished low to the keeper’s left.
The tie was long dead, but there was still plenty of time for Arjen Robben to grab a second, and for Douglas Costa to grab a third, and Arturo Vidal a fourth and fifth as the 10-man Gunners chased the game. The goals erased any chance this match could have been the springboard for Arsenal’s customary strong finish to the season.
The good news is they’ve been here before. The bad news is the Premier League top six is stronger than it’s ever been, and Champions League qualification is far from the guarantee it has come to feel for this club over the past two decades.

Bayern were excellent over the two legs, and remain one of, if not the, favorite to win the competition. They’ll face tougher tests ahead, but this result should further underline their immense quality.
