When looking at many of the mid-major conferences around college basketball in the 2016-17 season, there are a high number of leagues with a great deal of parity. However, the SWAC is not one of those conferences. Instead, this has largely been a one team league this season, but that doesn’t mean something wild can’t happen in the 2017 SWAC Tournament.

The Texas Southern Tigers are the No. 1 seed in the SWAC Tournament after posting a 16-2 record in league play. That mark gave them a three-game cushion over the next best team in the conference. What’s more, they’re one of only two teams playing in the 2017 SWAC Tournament that has an above-.500 record overall, going 20-11 in the regular season.

Joining the Tigers as the other team with more wins than losses on the regular season is the No. 2 seeded Alcorn State Braves. The Braves went 13-5 in conference play this season and 16-13 overall. Beyond that, every other team in the conference is sub-.500 on the year. But then again, this is March Madness, the time of year made for upsets and Cinderellas.

As such, you can’t rule out the possibility of Texas Southern not being able to perform like the No. 1 seed in their conference tourney. Who could upset them? Let’s take a look at the 2017 SWAC Tournament bracket. For the printable version, simply click on the image and you’ll be directed there:

Considering that Alabama State went 8-22 on the season, I think the Tigers might be safe in the first round.

Even so, Zach Lofton—Texas Southern’s leading scorer—and company must show up in the 2017 SWAC Tournament. If not, they’d have to write this season down as a disappointment. They’ve dominated the conference to this point and now simply need to punctuate it with a ticket to the Big Dance.
