The Atlantic 10 is easily one of the most entertaining ‘underdog’ sort of conferences. While not included in the more mainstream ‘Power 5 + Big East’ basketball power axis, its teams have proven incredibly successful in the NCAA tournament in recent years. The league has average over four NCAA bids per year in the last five years, and continues to put strong squads in the tournament even after teams like Xavier and (after a year) Butler.

Everyone remembers VCU’s run from Last Four In to Final Four in 2011-12. But Dayton made an Elite Eight in 2014, and the league’s teams have put someone in the Sweet 16 in three of the past five years.

There are a trio of extremely quality teams in the Atlantic 10 this year. Dayton is back to lead the pack, having secured a 15-3 conference record and the 1-seed in the upcoming tournament. Coach Archie Miller has put together another balanced squad that sports an offense and a defense in the top-50, per KenPom. An egalitarian attack spearheaded by the guard-big tandem of Charles Cooke and Kendall Pollard will look to lead Dayton to its first conference tournament championship since 2003.

Standing in the way will be VCU and Rhode Island. VCU has continued its success since the departure of Shaka Smart for Texas. Will Wade’s squad will look to rely on its defense — and top-25 steal rate — to carry it to victory in Pittsburgh. They may not need the victory to get into the tournament — Joe Lunardi has them comfortably in the field — but wins can only help its seed.

Rhode Island also depends on its defense to win many of its games – but they may need it to carry them to the autobid. Anchored at the back by a rotation of Hassan Martin and Kuran Iverson, Rhode Island blocks 16.7 percent of opponent attempts – a top 2 rate in the country. The reliable rim protection also helps the team extend to the 3-point line, as teams are shooting just 29.4 percent against the Rams on the season. Rhode Island is currently on the bubble, but a run to the final could secure them a 3rd A-10 tournament bid.

Richmond, Davidson, or St. Bonaventure could make some noise, but the top-3 teams are a clear cut above the rest. It’d be a surprise if a pair of them didn’t make the final.
