The Baltimore Ravens have released outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil, as the team continues to get younger and cheaper.

This is going to be a challenge for general manager Ozzie Newsome and the Ravens. After watching right tackle agree to terms with the Detroit Lions, Newsome released long-time star Elvis Dumervil, clearing $6 million in cap space, per Over The Cap.

Dumervil, 33, leaves Baltimore after spending four seasons in purple and black. With the Ravens, Dumervil racked up 35.5 sacks, including 17.0 in 2014. Before joining Baltimore, the Miami, FL native was with the Denver Broncos for six years, accumulating another 63.5 sacks, giving him 99 for his career.

While he’s getting older, there should be plenty of interest in his game. Dumervil can still rush the passer and play a majority of snaps. A few of the possible contenders for his services include the Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts. All three have ample cap space and could use a 3-4 outside linebacker to come off the edge.

Baltimore finished 8-8 last year but will look much different come September. Leading receiver and future Hall of Famer Steve Smith Sr. retired, and Wagner’s departure leaves a significant hole on the right side of the line. In addition, there was the early retirement of inside linebacker Zach Orr, and defensive tackle Brandon Williams is a key free agent.

At this juncture, it seems the Ravens will try to rebuild on both sides of the ball for a few years, hoping to get one more Super Bowl run during Joe Flacco’s prime.
