Free agent safety Micah Hyde has other offers outside of the Green Bay Packers and will probably not end up re-signing with the Packers in free agency.

The Green Bay Packers were a great team last season, but unraveled in the secondary when it mattered most. Despite having a ton of salary cap space, the Packers rarely partake in NFL free agency, only to typically re-sign their own.

Well, it looks likely that the Packers will be losing a key member of their secondary this offseason. According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, “safety Micah Hyde is said to be ‘aggressively pursuing other options’ out of the Packers.”

Hyde had spent all four of his professional seasons out of Iowa with the Packers organization. While he has played in eight career playoff games already, Hyde may sense that Green Bay has been unable to deliver on promises of Super Bowl contention it couldn’t keep.

The Packers haven’t reached the Super Bowl since the 2010 NFL season. Green Bay has arguably the best pure-talent in the game in starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but he’s not a young kid anymore.

Losing Hyde doesn’t help the sub-par Packers secondary in the slightest. Green Bay already has several other key free agents to worry about in guard T.J. Lang, outside linebacker Nick Perry, and tight end Jared Cook.

One would think that Packers general manager Ted Thompson would be aggressive in trying to re-tool his patchwork secondary in multiple ways this offseason. Green Bay prefers to build through the draft. However, the Packers can’t let a player like Hyde walk away in free agency, especially when the Packers have cap room to bring him back.
