NFL Rumors: Tony Romo to be released by Dallas Cowboys Thursday
By John Buhler
Unless they are able to trade him in the 11th hour, the Dallas Cowboys are expected to release backup quarterback Tony Romo before the start of free agency.
With 2017 NFL free agency being officially underway at 4:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, Mar. 9, NFL teams will be looking to get better with a few high-priced veteran acquisitions. One player that might be a free agent by that time is Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Tony Romo.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, “there is a very strong likelihood that barring a trade off, the Cowboys [will] release Tony Romo tomorrow.”
Romo lost his starting job with the Cowboys after breaking his back in a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. His backup Dak Prescott emerged as a franchise quarterback in 2016, helping the Cowboys go 13-3 and land the No. 1 seed in the NFC Playoffs.
Trading Romo is in the best interest of the Cowboys so that the team can land something in return for a short-term franchise quarterback. However, Romo wants to start and owner Jerry Jones may be willing to let Romo walk for nothing out of good faith.
Teams like the Houston Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs make the most sense for Romo. He could sign with two of the better teams in the AFC. With those two defenses, Romo could realistically play the New England Patriots in the 2017 AFC Championship.

However, he seems to want to play with the Denver Broncos for general manager John Elway. Going the Peyton Manning route to Denver would be a bold strategy for Romo. Denver is a strong organization, but has a rookie head coach in Vance Joseph and plays in the toughest division in football. If Dallas does let Romo walk, let the madness begin!
