The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with Brian Hoyer on a reported two-year deal, giving them a bridge to the future.

San Francisco was able to put a quarterback on the roster, agreeing in principle with Brian Hoyer on a two-year deal, according to Ian Rapoport.

Hoyer is going to a place with a new general manager and head coach in John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan, respectively. Considering he’s the only signal caller on the roster, he likely sees this as a chance to start for a season or two, getting one more chance to prove his worth.

At 31 years old, Hoyer is coming off a season that ended in October with a broken arm against the Green Bay Packers. In 2015, Hoyer had a career season, throwing 20 touchdowns to help lead the Houston Texans into the playoffs as AFC South champs. However, he was dreadful in the Wild Card game, throwing four interceptions in a 30-0 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

With Hoyer moving on from Chicago, it’s clear that the Bears will be looking to add another quarterback to the mix. There have been rumors about Mike Glennon coming in to be a starter, while the draft also remains an option.

The 49ers will assuredly bring in a young quarterback to compete with Hoyer, whether it be in the first round of April’s draft or otherwise. A couple of names to watch include Mitchell Trubisky, DeShone Kizer, Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes.
