Jay Cutler: 5 free agent destinations for former Bears quarterback
By John Buhler
The Jay Cutler era is over with the Chicago Bears after eight disappointing years. Here are the five best landing spots for Cutler in free agency.
Not since the George W. Bush administration have the Chicago Bears decided to make wholesale changes to the quarterback position. The entire Barack Obama administration in Washington simultaneously overlapped with something less than stellar at Soldier Field.
On Thursday before the opening of 2017 NFL free agency, the Bears finally released starting quarterback Jay Cutler. He will be 34 years old this season and it’s best that both parties move on.
Chicago has targeted former Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup quarterback Mike Glennon is Cutler’s successor in the Windy City. Here are the five teams that would make the most sense for Cutler to land in free agency this spring.
At this point of his NFL career, Cutler needs to take whatever starting opportunity he has for granted no matter how fleeting it may be. Cutler could sign with the Los Angeles Rams this offseason to compete with Jared Goff in 2017.
Goff is the future of Rams football, but he has a way to go to being a stable franchise quarterback. With Cutler, the Rams might be able to finally move the chains in the passing game. They haven’t really done that since Marc Bulger played under center for them in St. Louis.
New Rams head coach Sean McVay likes to go vertical in his passing game. However, general manager Les Snead keeps bringing in bubble screen guys like Tavon Austin and now Robert Woods. Cutler has his issues, but his arm strength is top-tier in football.
Worst case scenario, Cutler and his wife Kristin Cavallari could soak up some rays in Los Angeles, maybe make that trip to Laguna Beach to blow off some steam when things start to get weird with the dysfunctional Rams. In all fairness, this is not a bad landing spot for Cutler at all. He might actually make the Rams better.
