The New England Patriots are reportedly asking the Cleveland Browns for the first overall pick for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
The New England Patriots are reportedly asking the Cleveland Browns for the first overall pick in upcoming draft in exchange for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
The Browns made a quarterback trade on the opening day of NFL free agency. Cleveland acquired former Houston Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler and a second-round pick to take on his sizable contract. The trade has led to speculation that the Browns would like to send a package of second-round picks to New England for Garoppolo. The Browns own two second-round picks in 2017 and three second-round picks in 2018.
However, de-facto Patriots general manager and head coach Bill Belichick’s asking price for the third-year quarterback is seemingly a lot higher. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports that the Browns will have to offer the first overall pick in this year’s draft if they want Garoppolo.
Cabot also adds that the Browns would be willing to trade the 12th overall pick that they acquired from Philadelphia last year in the Carson Wentz trade and a second-round pick for Garoppolo. However, the Patriots are set on getting the first overall pick for Garoppolo.
The Patriots drafted Garoppolo in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of FCS school Eastern Illinois. In his three-year career, Garoppolo has started two games for the Patriots while Tom Brady was suspended to start the season. In his career, Garoppolo has completed 67 percent of his passes with five touchdown and zero interceptions.

The Browns are expected to take Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett with the first overall pick, should they keep the choice. Currently, the Browns have Robert Griffin III and Osweiler on the roster.
