Reshad Jones is returning to the Dolphins and getting a lot of money to stick around.

Reshad Jones has been with the Miami since being drafted in 2010 as a fifth-round pick. He started 12 or more games from 2011 to 2016, including all 16 in three of those years. However, a shoulder injury limited him to just six appearances.

Well, the Dolphins have locked up their star safety to a contract extension to keep him around longer, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He’ll get $60 million over five years with $35 million of it guaranteed.

This deal will keep Jones around until 2021 and no longer puts the Dolphins at risk of losing him in 2018, as his deal was up after next season. It takes him through his age 33 season, if the Dolphins don’t decide to release him beforehand.

This large deal coming after the shoulder injury makes this an interesting move for the Dolphins. They have to presume he’ll be good to go for the 2017 season, which is risky, especially with the $35 million guaranteed being thrown his way. If he’s healthy and able to stay productive, then retaining Jones for this amount won’t look like a bad move.

From 2010 to 2015, Jones had 36 passes deflected and 15 interceptions, two of which went for touchdowns in his last full season. He also had a career-high tackle total of 135 that year.

Through his injury-shorted season in 2016, the 29-year-old had 51 tackles and one interception. It was steady production through a short time, so the Dolphins must be banking on this staying consistent into his early 30’s.

This move is part of a busy offseason for the Dolphins, who already retained wide receiver, Kenny Stills and defensive end, Andre Branch. With the league year just getting underway, maybe there will be more to come as Miami looks to compete in the AFC East in 2017.
