Philadelphia Eagles rumors: Connor Barwin released
The Philadelphia Eagles have released defensive end Connor Barwin to save money against their cap, providing another quality free agent.
Connor Barwin has been released by the Philadelphia Eagles putting the 30-year-old on the market before the official start of free agency. Barwin has played seven seasons in the NFL, three with the Houston Texans before joining Philadelphia over the past four campaigns.
In his career, Barwin has racked up 49.5 sacks, with his best season coming in 2014, when he notched 14.5. Over the past two seasons, his pace has slowed, combining for only 12. Still, he could provide a team with a nice pass-rushing threat off the edge in a 4-3 system.
Philadelphia moved on from Barwin because of a $7.75 million savings against the cap. The Eagles didn’t need to cut the veteran in order to be cap compliant by 4 p.m. EST (the start of the new league year), but it allows more flexibility for general manager Howie Roseman to make moves.
As for some potential new homes, don’t be surprised if Barwin stays within the division. The New York Giants have been active over the past few years in free agency and could use a rotational player to go with Olivier Vernon and Jason Pierre-Paul. Another option might be the Detroit Lions, who also need help getting to the quarterback.

All told, Barwin’ age and declining production could hurt the amount of guaranteed money coming his way, but expect a multi-year deal with some incentives along the way. At the right price, he could be a very valuable pick-up before next season.
