After spending one year with the New York Giants, Robbie Gould will take his talents to San Francisco.

Robbie Gould is packing his bags and heading where the road has always led: west. According to Jordan Raanan, Gould has decided to pursue other NFL options by way of signing a reported two-year deal with the 49ers. The financial terms were, of course, neither finalized nor reported, but it adds some confidence to a special teams unit in need of a replacement kicker.

With this relocation and a mood for new scenery, Gould now leaves an empty slot for the New York Giants. Other than Gould, K Josh Brown ran into some trouble concerning a domestic incident. As a result, the 37-year-old will have to sit out one game during the upcoming season. Until then, the situation remains unresolved as to whether or not the Giants will sign a kicker as insurance during this year’s free agency.

Gould is a solid addition to the 49ers. Phil Dawson, a longtime NFL kicker of 18 years, wrangled up his suitcases and headed towards Arizona. And with this signing, San Francisco would continue the tradition of power kickers, especially those that can split the uprights. During his four years with San Francisco, Dawson went 14-for-20 from long range. David Akers, who spent a couple of years in the Bay Area — before the Dawson era would begin — went a paltry 9-for-15 from 50-or-more yards out.

In the whole of his tenure, Gould represented much of Chicago (11 years), but in 2016, had a change of heart and moved elsewhere. As a member of the Bears organization, Gould would register a perfect season in terms of field goals made from 20 to 29 yards out (86-for-86). He also notched 23 field goals that were over 50 yards out while with Chicago. His time in New York, however, went a little differently, as he recorded only 10 total field goals.
