The Chicago Bears desperately needed to upgrade their woeful secondary, and the signing of Prince Amukamara does that to a degree.

Chicago was 3-13 last year, something that has both general manager Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox on hot seats. Pace is feeling the heat, as he’s been ultra-aggressive in free agency with the signings of Mike Glennon, Quintin Demps and Dion Sims on Thursday.

On Friday, Pace came to terms on a reported one-year deal with former Jacksonville Jaguars corner Prince Amukamara. Amukamara left the New York Giants following the expiration of his rookie deal and signed on for a year with Jacksonville, but the experiment didn’t last. The former University of Nebraska star played in 14 games and recorded 49 tackles with no interceptions.

Amukamara isn’t the answer at corner for the bears in a long-term sense, but he works in the interim. Chicago’s main concern about the signing has to deal with Amukamara’s penchant for getting injured, as he’s only played one full season out of six.

Look for the Bears to aggressively shore up their defense in the draft. With the third-overall pick, Chicago could look to land Marshon Lattimore, the top corner on many boards out of Ohio State.

The team could also draft Jonathan Allen from the University of Alabama, a potentially dominant nose tackle. Other secondary options include safeties Malik Hooker and Jamal Adams, who are both expected to be top-10 selections.
