Report: Mike Mayock a candidate for Washington Redskins general manager job
By John Buhler
The Washington Redskins parted ways with former general manager Scot McCloughan on Thursday. One candidate for the vacancy is the NFL Network’s Mike Mayock.
The Washington Redskins front office has been in a state of turmoil for the last few weeks. Former general manager Scot McCloughan didn’t travel with the team to Indianapolis for the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine. He was relieved of his duties as general manager on Thursday, Mar. 9.
McCloughan’s dismissal has brought a ton of negative attention to the Redskins organization during the early part of NFL free agency. It seems that they are already looking for a replacement. One guy that has emerged as a viable candidate would be the NFL Network’s draft expert Mike Mayock. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Field Yates broke the news of Mayock’s candidacy.
Mayock has been with the NFL Network since 2005 and had been an color commentator for college football games for ABC, CBS, and NBC before that. He is best known as an elite talent evaluator as the lead draft guy for NFL Network. His big boards carry weight like Mel Kiper Jr.’s and Todd McShay’s do with ESPN.
While Mayock has been around football all his life, he has never been a general manager before, let alone worked in a front office. However, he wouldn’t be the first guy to be a first-time general manager with no experience whatsoever heading into the 2017 NFL season. The San Francisco 49ers hired former Pro Bowl safety and FOX football analyst John Lynch to be their new general manager.

Given what he does for NFL Network, Mayock could be a very strong candidate for the general manager position. Perhaps more than ever, an NFL team needs to get it right in the NFL Draft. Why not continuously pick the brain of one of the best talent evaluators in football by bringing him into Redskins Park?
