9. Jose Bautista

There are certain players in Major League Baseball who feed off doubt and controversy. Jose Bautista is one of those players. Throughout his career, Bautista has been at his best when he is able to manipulate slights (perceived or real) to further fuel his fire. There’s a good reason Bautista feeds off doubt, perhaps more than any other player in the league. He was passed over by four teams before finally establishing himself with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Bautista will have plenty of extra motivation this season. Entering his walk year, the 36-year-old had talked about seeking a new deal for more than $150 million. That turned into be extremely wishful thinking. Bautista struggled with injuries last year, and slashed just .234/.366/.452 with 22 home runs and 69 RBI in only 116 games.

The Blue Jays played hardball with Bautista on the open market, and he was ultimately forced to accept what amounts to a pillow deal — one year guaranteed for $18.5 million with a mutual and vesting options for the next two years. Bautista’s average has been in decline for the past two years, but his excellent on-base skills remain. If he is healthy, Bautista is a lock for over 30 home runs and close to 100 walks.
