Deonte Burton threw down a wicked alley-oop against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday, providing the final dagger for the Iowa State Cyclones.
With the Big 12 championship on the line, the Iowa State Cyclones were able to win their third conference title in the last four years. The biggest highlight of the game, however, had to go to guard Deonte Burton.
Finishing the game with 16 points and five rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting, Burton was a driving force behind his team’s win on Saturday, and his monster alley-oop dunk over a helpless West Virginia defender was the crown jewel of his contributions.
With the Cyclones leading 73-64 with just over two minutes to play, they were able to break the Mountaineers’ full-court press. Guard Nazareth Mitrou-Long found Burton running towards the basket.
He threw a perfect lob pass, which Burton was able to catch and ruthlessly throw down with one hand over a poor Mountaineer defender coming from the weak side:
In a day full of college basketball, Burton’s dunk was perhaps the most exciting play of all. Not only did it serve as the final dagger to put the Big 12 championship away, but it was an absolutely stellar play all on its own.
The Cyclones were led by Monte Morris, who was the player of the tournament and finished with 17 points, six rebounds and two steals. Matt Thomas added 12 points and five boards. The The No. 11 Mountaineers were led by 18 points from Jevon Carter, but came up short against No. 23 Iowa State, 80-74.
