The newest guilty pleasure on television has arrived with Ryan Murphy’s newest show on FX, Feud: Bette and Joan.
In the series premiere last week we were introduced to Joan Crawford, a Hollywood legend who desperately wanted to breathe some life into her fading career. She put the wheels in motion to bring Whatever Happened to Baby Jane to life on the big screen, and to do it she recruited rival Bette Davis to play the role of Baby Jane. Last week’s premiere episode ended after Susan Sarandon’s Davis showed up on set in the iconic makeup from the film.
In this week’s “The Other Woman,” Joan and Bette find that they have to stick together during the production of the film because although they are major Hollywood stars, it’s still very much a man’s world and the director, Robert Aldritch, can’t be trusted to take care of their needs. This isn’t to say that Joan and Bette are friends, rather, it’s more that they both know that they’re more powerful working together to stick it to the studio.
Feud is fun to watch, not only because the inside look at one of Hollywood’s biggest rivalries is fascinating, but because Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are masterful at bringing these two women to life onscreen.It’s pure Hollywood decadence at its finest, and it’s another hit for Ryan Murphy.
