Despite their best efforts, the Dallas Cowboys likely won’t be trading Tony Romo.

The Dallas Cowboys were expected to release long-time quarterback Tony Romo on Thursday March 9, the start of the new NFL year. However, the Cowboys have yet to release him. Perhaps seeing the Houston Texans trade Brock Osweiler got the Cowboys thinking they could get something in return for Romo. Despite a very strong effort, it appears a Romo trade won’t be happening.

It’s understandable why Jerry Jones tried to trade him as opposed to release him outright. By trading him, the Cowboys could have gotten something in return for their former star quarterback. However, with minimal interest in an old quarterback with a long list of injuries, there just hasn’t been a market for him, especially with his bloated contract in tow.

Releasing him is the right choice for both parties. First of all, the Cowboys will still save a lot of cap space, which is important for them. Dak Prescott has the keys to the franchise and even Romo is willing to admit it. There’s no reason for them to keep him around when they have needs to fill and very little cap space. Romo would have been nice to keep around for insurance, but that’s not a luxury Dallas can afford.

Also, releasing Romo allows him to choose where he goes. Romo will have to weigh his options and find the perfect fit for him. The Houston Texans and Denver Broncos are expected be his strongest suitors. By trading Osweiler, it appears the Texans were preparing to make a run at Romo. Also, the Broncos have upgraded their offensive line, something which could tempt him to join them for one last run at a Super Bowl. John Elway is a very persuasive person and Denver might be a quarterback away from contending.
