Netflix’s next Marvel series, Iron Fist, is set to begin streaming on March 17, but who are the mysterious villains known as the Hand?
The next Marvel Netflix series is almost here, and we’ll get our first in-depth look at a new group of villains in Iron First, the Hand.
To be brief, the Hand are a secret ninja organization. Yes, you read that correctly, but, instead of an ancient order consisting of mystical assassins like DC’s League of Shadows, it looks like the Marvel Cinematic Universe uses the Hand as an organization filled with and created by criminals.
If you read the comics, then, good for you, you probably already know all about the Hand. If you’re like me and never read any of the comics, then the only reference you probably have to this mysterious organization is from the first Marvel series on Netflix, Daredevil, and a brief mention in Luke Cage.
In Daredevil, Stick, Matt Murdock’s mentor, hunted the Hand as a member of the Chaste organization, whose purpose was to defeat the Hand. This side plot gets in the way of Daredevil’s crusade against Wilson Fisk and leads to a fantastic fight sequence in which Murdock instead fights a member of the Hand. Losing time and time again but refusing to give up, Murdock survives after intelligently dousing the ninja in gasoline, who then accidentally lights himself on fire.
What we’ve seen of the Hand so far is brief but intense. In the comics, the Hand served a demon, which I have a feeling the MCU stays away from, but it implies that Marvel and Netflix intend to go extremely dark with some of the Iron Fist storylines.
