With a win over the Hawks Monday night, the Spurs have tied the Warriors for the league’s best record.
Remember when everyone said the Warriors would roll through the league? Or when it was the general consensus they would win 70 games? Well, neither have happened. Granted, the Warriors are sitting pretty with a 52-14 record. But, there’s a team that’s sitting just as pretty as them — the Spurs. On Monday night, the Spurs defeated the Atlanta Hawks to tie the Warriors record wise. What makes this more impressive, is that the Spurs are without their post anchor LaMarcus Aldridge.
The Golden State Warriors have struggled, too without their star forward Kevin Durant, who suffered a bruised bone and an MCL sprain against the Washington Wizards on Feb. 28. Counting that loss to the Wizards, the Warriors have dropped five of their last seven. The Steph Curry from last season has only come in bits and pieces, leaving Kerr no choice but to rest him alongside Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala and Klay Thompson this past Saturday night against the Spurs. Kerr is aware the Spurs are coming for their spot and needs his available talent to be ready come April.

There are a few key takeaways from the Spurs tying the Warriors. One is that you should never count out San Antonio, ever. Second, let’s stop skipping the importance of the process that it takes for a team to become a champion. It takes more than talent to be the best, it takes time, luck, health, and chemistry. There is still plenty of basketball to be played to decide the No. 1 in the Western Conference but San Antonio is looking strong at the right time. The next matchup between these two teams will be March 29 in San Antonio.
