The UNC Greensboro Spartans face the Syracuse Orange in the 2017 NIT first round on Tuesday, March 14. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
On Selection Sunday, Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse Orange didn’t hear their name called among the field of 68. That, of course, was much to the chagrin of the head coach. However, they were awarded a top seed in the 2017 NIT. And given his recent comments, it was quite fortuitous that Syracuse would have to welcome the UNC Greensboro Spartans to the Carrier Dome in the first round on Wednesday, March 15.
Boeheim said while talking to the media during the ACC Tournament that he didn’t think the event should ever return to Greensboro, NC. That’s where the tourney has traditionally been played, but was moved to Brooklyn, NY due to North Carolina’s controversial House Bill 2. However, the Syracuse head coach’s criticism had nothing to do with the so-called “Bathroom Bill.” Instead, he insulted the city and its location.
So it’s perfectly fitting that the two teams will square off in the NIT. Moreover, it could be an interesting matchup. Syracuse went just 18-14 in the regular season, compared to UNC Greensboro’s 25-9 overall mark. Andrew White III and Tyler Lydon will lead the Orange, but will meet Francis Alonso, Diante Baldwin and R.J. White of the Spartans that have other plans. What’s more, UNCG will have that bit of extra motivation to represent the city.
