Monaco 3-1 Manchester City: Highlights and recap
By Dan Voicescu
Monaco beat Manchester City 3-1 in the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday, March 15. Here are all the highlights from the match.
Manchester City probably should have learned this lesson in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against Monaco, but since they didn’t, the French side were happy to remind them in the opening 10 minutes of the second: Monaco know how to attack.
Kylian Mbappe, the 18-year-old who has attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs in the world for his performances this season, tapped Monaco ahead in the eighth minute after Benjamin Mendy beat the (unsurprisingly) unconvincing defensive tandem of Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane on the left wing.
City slowed down the pace of the game after conceding, seemingly happy in the knowledge they still had an aggregate lead. The problem is they can’t really defend, as they showed for the thousandth (that’s an estimate) time this season, and the second time this match, in the 29th minute.
Mendy was the provider again, and he profited from more slack defending on City’s right side. This time it was David Silva and John Stones who failed to read a relatively straightforward overlap, and Fabinho who finished in the box.
City were much improved in the second half, though that was in large part thanks to Monaco’s decision to drop off and try to defend their own lead. Raheem Sterling and Aguero both went close before the Citizens finally scored in the 71st minute. Sterling forced Danijel Subasic into a diving save and Sane was first to the rebound.
The Premier League club completed their trifecta of defensive incompetence, however, within 10 minutes. This time it was slack marking on a free-kick that cost them, as Tiemoue Bakayoko directed an excellent header past Willy Caballero.
