Brandon Goodwin put forth a heroic effort for FGCU against Florida State in March Madness, but he couldn’t get by the rim on one dunk attempt

The FGCU Eagles looked like the Dunk City of yesteryear early in their First Round matchup of the 2017 NCAA Tournament against the Florida State Seminoles. Their first bucket came on a monstrous posterization on the interior. Later in the first half, they followed it with another poster, this one with a bit more flash coming off the wing. All the while, though, it was Brandon Goodwin keeping FGCU competitive, even if he wasn’t filling the highlight reel from above the rim.

In the second half we may have figured out—much to the brief embarrassment of Goodwin—why he wasn’t trying to rise up and fly to make his impact.

Midway through the second half as FGCU trailed by a mere six points, the star guard for the Eagles tried to swing momentum on a single play. Getting the ball on the right wing, he found a lane and drove. Then he took off and cocked the ball back like he was going to try and bring down the backboard.

Instead, the rim brought Goodwin down. The junior didn’t rise up quite high enough and his attempt to throw it down hard only made the clank of getting rejected by the rim more emphatic:

Just so you clearly see how bad it was, a different angle of the same play—in slow motion, too:

Dunk City must have had a temporary blackout on Thursday night.

In all fairness, Goodwin carried FGCU for much of the night, so it only stands to reason that his legs might be a little gassed at this point in the game. Unfortunately for him, that’s not going to make the lowlight disappear or repair his pride after the rim played some of the best defense of the night.
