Deonte Burton put down another big dunk for the Iowa State Cyclones Thursday night.

The Cyclones’ Deonte Burton has a history of throwing down vicious slams. At 6-foot-5, Burton is explosive off the floor and he made sure the country knew about his athleticism during the first half of Iowa State’s opening round game against the Nevada Wolfpack.

Early in the offensive possession below, Burton set a high ball screen for guard Matt Thomas before popping to the left corner. Here’s what happened next:

NCAA Tournament highlights are always fun and this is a beautiful one because Burton only had one thing in mind when he caught the ball on the left wing. With nobody around, the senior burst toward the rim with clear intentions to dunk all over Nevada’s Cam Oliver and anybody else who got in his way.

The Wolfpack’s big man wanted none of it though, as he slid out of the way to let Burton have his highlight reel slam without any resistance.

You’re welcome to call that cowardice, but in reality that’s the smartest play Oliver will make all night. As a potential future NBA player, the Nevada sophomore has a reputation to protect and ending up on Burton’s poster is a surefire way to earn a bit of (harmless) mocking in the future.

It’s also worth noting that Burton delivered the dunk in Milwaukee, WI. Before playing for the Cyclones, Burton played for the Marquette Golden Eagles — the host of these opening round games — so he should be pretty comfortable in the area. Or maybe he just wanted to remind the host school what it’s missing out on now that he’s hooping in Ames, IA.

The Cyclones have built a heavy lead over Nevada at the half in a dangerous No. 5 vs. No. 12 matchup in the Midwest Region. The Purdue Boilermakers await the winner.
