It not only brings together 68 teams, but has passionate, casual and even non-fans of college basketball keep their eye on this postseason tournament. They’ll begin to follow along with the opening round on Thursday, as Maryland and Xavier are set to go head-to-head.
Maryland steps into this game as a No. 6 seed in the West Region. Their most recent outing came against Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament, resulting in a loss. Prior to this and their other tournament games, the Terrapins had lost five of their previous seven games, so momentum isn’t on their side.
However, leading the way is star guard Melo Trimble. He produced a steady 17 points and 3.7 assists per game to lead Maryland. If they go far in the NCAA Tournament, it will likely be due to his play.

Xavier is the No. 11 seed out of the West Region. They had a very good start to the season, but faded hard, as the season concluded. They lost six consecutive games, a streak that concluded a short time before their conference tournament. The Musketeers reeled off three consecutive wins afterward, but it’s difficult to throw away their recent decline with the injuries the team has dealt with.
