Robert Williams is another lottery bound prospect who won’t be playing in the NCAA Tournament this March. His Texas A&M Aggies finished 16-15, but that was hardly the fault of Williams who spent much of the season playing out of position in order to accommodate for a lack of a point guard and injuries. The 19-year old was incredibly productive, averaging 18.3 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per 40 minutes.
Right now, he best projects as a center at the next level. He’s the best rim protector in the class because his wingspan (7-foot-4) and athleticism help make up for the fact that he’s just 6-foot-9. He’s also a quality pick-and-roll finisher, can move his feet on the perimeter and was a good ball mover for the Aggies.
The good news is that Williams may not be forever relegated to playing the center spot. His passing and potential as a shooter make it likely that he’ll eventually be able to spend some minutes at power forward. Williams has a nice shooting motion and used it to knock down a decent number of mid-range jump shots this season. He doesn’t have 3-point range yet, but it’s something that you can anticipate him developing down the line.
For the Charlotte Hornets, Williams represents a nice, high upside piece in the frontcourt.
