As the top European prospect in the 2017 NBA Draft, Frank Ntilikina obviously won’t be playing in the NCAA Tournament. His team, Strasbourg, plays in the French league and Ntilikina is playing 17.1 minutes per game.
The 18-year old has upside as a point guard, something he’s shown playing in youth international competition, but he’s spent a lot of his time playing off the ball for Strasbourg. There are some questions about Ntilikina’s ability to create individually, which is why he may ultimately wind up as a strong 3-and-D shooting guard. Here, though, the Dallas Mavericks need to find a point guard and Ntilikina is their best bet. This season, he has improved as a 3-point shooter, making 40.6 percent of his attempts across all competitions. He’s also highly valued as a defender. He moves well laterally and can guard multiple positions. He’ll need to put on strength, but at just 18-years old, there’s plenty of time to do that. Ntilikina does a nice job generating steals as well. In addition to working on his ability to create for himself, Ntilikina needs to improve as a passer. He’s got a negative assist-to-turnover ratio and will have to improve as a facilitator.
