The St. Mary’s Gaels face the VCU Rams on Thursday, March 16 in the first round of 2017 March Madness. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

Looking at the overall record of the St. Mary’s Gaels this season, their four losses overall are highlight impressive. However, it’s less impressive considering that they lost three times to the best team they played all season, performing well against the rest of a weak West Coast Conference. Now it’s March Madness and they’ll be put to the test against the VCU Rams in the Round of 64 on Thursday, March 16 in the 7-10 matchup out of the West Region.

Outside of Gonzaga—the team they lost to three times—St. Mary’s only played two other tournament teams in the regular season. They defeated Dayton and Nevada, but their resume isn’t as impressive as their record might otherwise suggest. The Gaels will need a big game from center Jock Landale, their team-leader in points and rebounds per game, if they’re to have any success in the tournament.

VCU played a much tougher schedule coming out of the Atlantic-10 this season, finishing with a 26-8 overall record. Though they don’t have any major wins to their credit either, they’re also a talented team with something to prove. VCU’s success against St. Mary’s will hinge upon senior guard JeQuan Lewis and junior forward Justin Tillman having their way.

It will be interesting to see how the Gaels perform when tested, considering their lack of success against other high-quality teams this season. However, VCU has been inconsistent, so they need to prove themselves as well. Ultimately, this should be a close contest that will go down to the wire.
