DeMarcus Cousins to miss game against Rockets with injury
DeMarcus Cousins will miss at least one game due to injury.
DeMarcus Cousins is out with an injury due to a contusion in his left rib, as the Pelicans announced today. New Orleans also announced that Cousins has soreness in his left knee and had an MRI on that too.Luckily, the MRI came back negative meaning there is nothing too serious keeping him out of tonight’s game against the Rockets. His rib injury was sustained from a collision with James Johnson when the Pelicans were taking on the Heat a few nights ago.

While it’s a bummer to see Cousins miss time with injury, his longterm health should be more important to New Orleans than anything else going on this season. They’re not going to make the playoffs, and fitting him in at this point really is pointless. Alvin Gentry and the coaching staff will have an entire offseason to work Cousins into the rotation with an actual consistent set of players. As it stands right now, New Orleans is just trying to finish out the season in one piece.
Cousins so far has not quite had the impact he was hoping to have in New Orleans. He’s sat on the bench to close out multiple games and the Pelicans have struggled to fit him into their system. As they’ve battled injuries and attempted to fit Cousins in on the fly, it’s led to falling out of the playoff race. This means Cousins will spend another offseason at home instead of playing in late April/May.

It will be interesting to see what the Pelicans look like once they’ve finally figured out how to work in Cousins. They recently signed Jordan Crawford to a two-year contract and next season will be the first time they’ve had an actual core, possibly ever. New Orleans has a very important offseason ahead of them.
