Hasbro announces three new Monopoly game pieces
By Kat Tenbarge
From now on, playing Monopoly will look at little bit different. Hasbro tallied the votes and chose three new golden game pieces.
If you loved playing Monopoly with the wheelbarrow, thimble or boot as a kid, hold on to your childhood board game.
Hasbro announced this morning that those three game pieces have been booted (see what I did there?) in favor of a Tyrannosaurus rex, a penguin and a rubber ducky.
The Associated Press reports that more than 4.3 million people from 146 countries voted in an online poll to choose new game tokens.
"There were 64 contenders, including a winking emoji, a hashtag, a clunky ’80s-style cellphone and a pair of bunny slippers. The existing Scottish Terrier, battleship, racecar, top hat and cat tokens will carry on."
The announcement was made on the TODAY Show, along with Hasbro’s social media accounts.
So, how does everybody feel about these new changes?
Well, that’s a good point. There’s a definite nostalgia appeal to the wheelbarrow, the thimble and the boot, but it’s definitely a good PR move to bring breaking news to a board game that originated in 1903. And some commentators like the changes — after all, it was the people who voted.
And some people made jokes, while others complained that Monopoly is “a horrible game.” Come on, was that four-hour battle with your family so bad?
The first version of Monopoly was sold by the Parker Brothers in 1903. The newest edition, featuring the three gold tokens, will be stocked in toy stores this fall. What better time to refresh your economic skills with an old-fashioned family game than now?
