7. Richmond Upsets South Carolina (1998)
Just a year after allowing Coppin State to become the first 15th seed to advance past the first round, the Gamecocks got upset by the Richmond Spiders. South Carolina was the number three seed in the East Regional while Richmond was the No. 14 seed. You’d think the Gamecocks would be on upset alert after 1997, but it happened again. And this time, it was an even larger upset than the previous time. Coppin State got hot and stayed hot through their game in 1997. But Richmond got by them.
This one is far more heartbreaking than losing to Coppin State because they lost 62-61. It wasn’t a blowout like in 1997. Richmond continued their career of upsetting teams at March Madness while South Carolina took a while to get out of this hole. The Gamecocks didn’t go to another NCAA Tournament until 2004. This loss eventually led to head coach Eddie Fogler being fired. He tried his best to help them continue their success, but it turns out this loss was too much for them to overcome. Fogler got fired in 2001.
For Richmond, this is one of the highest moments for their basketball team. After not reaching March Madness since 1991, the Spiders once again made their mark. This isn’t the last time they’ll be on this list. In fact, speaking of which…
