Oklahoma State didn’t win the game, but they ruined a lot of people’s day in Vegas
Oklahoma State and Michigan played one of the best games of the tournament so far. The two sides battled right down to the wire with Michigan coming out on top at the end. Outside of people that might have had Oklahoma State moving on in their bracket, most people seem to be content with the final results of the game. However, it wasn’t quite as close as the final score indicates. Michigan did win a close contest, but they had the game well sealed away before that and just had to make free throws.
With not enough time to pull off a miracle, Oklahoma State inbounded the ball and fired up a quick meaningless 3-pointer. The shot went in and that was the end of the game: Michigan 92 – Oklahoma State 91. It was actually surprising to see the Cowboys make the shot, because the majority of the time these last second heaves fall short.

That should have been the end of it. However, it turns out that meaningless 3-pointer wasn’t so meaningless after all. The Vegas spreads had the game set at a 2.5. In the final seconds, on a pointless heave, an untold number of people lost their bets.
68% of the money at the William Hill sportsbooks in Nevada had Michigan covering by 2.5. They all lost on the final "meaningless" 3.

Bettors everywhere should feel sick. This is their actual worst nightmare. Everybody hears stories about the team that ruins a 20-point cover by going for a field goal down 21, or the basketball team that fouled for no reason at the end of a game and giving their opponent just enough points to cover, but this one hurts. It wasn’t in the middle of a blowout. It was a close game and happened right at the buzzer. The emotions they probably went through can’t be expressed in words.
