Richard Sherman: Ranking potential trade destinations
4. Los Angeles Chargers
Gus Bradley’s stint as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars did not go well, with a 14-48 record over nearly four seasons. But he was a well sought-after defensive coordinator candidate, and ultimately landed with the Chargers when Anthony Lynn was hired as head coach.
Bradley also has a tie to the Seahawks, as defensive coordinator there from 2009-2012 before taking the head coaching job in Jacksonville. That could lead to interest in Sherman from the Chargers, as a presumed seamless fit for the defensive scheme Bradley will look to install.
That said, despite cutting some notable players around the start of free agency, the Chargers only have around $12.3 million in salary cap space right now. Taking on Sherman’s $11.4 million for this year would thus be untenable, unless they could somehow also send a player to Seattle to help ease the financial burden.
The Chargers need to inspire a new fan base as they relocate, and adding a player like Sherman could help that effort. Some financial gymnastics will be required, but restructuring a few contracts has to be on the table for the Chargers if there’s any possibility to swing a trade for Sherman.
