Live highlights and updates from the middleweight battle on Saturday night between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs

Saturday night one of the premier boxers walking the planet at the moment will take to the ring once again to see if he wow us all again with his phenomenal punching power. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) will bring his WBA, WBC and IBF titles to the ring, along with his undefeated record, to take on mandatory challenger, Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs).

Now about those aforementioned titles, though. While GGG will be putting the IBF title on the line, Jacobs will not be eligible to walk out of the arena with it following an historic win. The IBF requires that the fighters participate in a mandatory weigh-in on Saturday morning, and this was an event that Jacobs skipped, presumably for some smart reasons. Still, though, should Jacobs be able to take down the Kazakh sensation, stunning the world, he will still be the WBC and WBA middleweight champ.

While Jacobs may not be the most well-known name out there in the boxing world at the moment, he does present some challenges for the seemingly unstoppable Golovkin. Many GGG opponents have been scoffed at, but the man who beat cancer in Jacobs is certainly not one of them.

This has the potential to be an exciting battle between two fighters with some power, and you can follow along with HBO updates below. Video will be provided, but only those authorized by HBO.

Round 1

Loud GGG chants immediately ring out through the crowd as the fighters measure one another to start. They trade jabs early, then Jacobs tries a flurry. Neither are taking any real chances here in the opening round, seeing what each other are working with here. Golovkin effective with the hard jabs.

Round 2

More measuring by the fighters, with two holds early. Much like the first round, not much action here between the two. Both fighters still trying to feel each other out.

Round 3

Jacobs lands a small body shot to GGG early in this one. As the round is coming to a close, GGG lands a hook on Jacobs.

Round 4

Immediately, Golovkin starts to bring the heat and down goes Jacobs! GGG starts to land his power shots now as he smells blood in the water. Crowd now loudly chanting for GGG once again as they sense the knockout coming. Jacobs trying to come back, but GGG just continues to land the hard jabs, which have to be wearing down Jacobs slowly but surely. That round was all GGG, by far.

Round 5

GGG again starts a round with a flurry of power punchers, stunning Jacobs in the process. These are eventually gonna take their toll. Jacobs keeps turning to southpaw, which is opening him up for a potential knockout here if GGG can find the right spot. Another good round for GGG in Round 5.

Round 6

GGG is doing a good job of cutting off the ring as he looks to get Jacobs against the ropes for more flurries, tossing the jabs in the process. Jacobs lands a HARD right hand, but GGG just seems un-phased, which taking punishment is something that we know he’s good at.

Jacobs was more aggressive and more confident in that round, which could be huge.

Round 7

Jacobs starts the round getting some quick shots in on GGG. Golovkin lands another right to Jacobs and the two are immediately tied up. GGG looks for a right but it’s actually Jacobs who lands one. Jacobs is backed into the corner again, but this time he fights his way out of it. Before the round ends, GGG lands a nice left and Jacobs answers. Then they fight after the bell! Great stuff here.

Round 8

The two come out jabbing and get tied up. After the break, audible chants of “DANIEL” ring out. GGG gets him to the ropes but Jacobs fights his way out again. Both men now trade jabs in the center of the ring. GGG is attacking a little more than previously in the fight but Jacobs is doing a nice job in countering. Golovkin throws a hard right but now it’s Jacobs who takes the shot pretty well. Jacobs lands a hard left hook to end the round.

Round 9

GGG comes right out throwing as the fight is nearing the distance. They return to the center of the ring where they’re trading some pretty powerful punches. Right under two minutes, Jacobs lands a hard right to the face of GGG. Under a minute to go, GGG lands a solid uppercut but Jacobs answers right back with a powerful hook. With the round coming to a close, GGG lands a flurry of hard jabs and Jacobs returns. What a round! These two are phenomenal.

Round 10

They meet in the middle of the ring and Jacobs lands some small jabs to the body. Near the ropes GGG misses with the jab and Jacobs counters with a right hook. GGG is starting to stay away from the body now, as he’s looking for the kill shot — one that he can’t find. Not a ton of action in this round until the end when they traded hard shots again.

Round 11

GGG comes out on the attack, getting Jacobs to the ropes. Jacobs once again gets himself out of the situation, though. With under two minutes, GGG lands another solid uppercut but it didn’t do much to Jacobs. They’re trading again and Jacobs lands some hard shots to the champion. These shots are hard but GGG just shakes his head. With the round coming to a close, Jacobs lands a hard hook to the face. GGG responds. FINAL ROUND!

Round 12

These two come right out and are hooked up. They break, but get right back there. They get to the center of the ring and trade some big shots once again, with GGG trying to use the uppercut once more. Jacobs lands a straight right to the face, followed by a hard uppercut that has GGG reeling a bit. Under ten seconds to go, they trade what they have left. Amazing fight!

We’re headed to the scorecards now!

Gennady Golovkin wins via unanimous decision, an outcome that will no doubt be met with some controversy.

Now should GGG come away with another impressive win, then of course we all sit and wait for the other middleweight king in Canelo Alvarez. Canelo will battle Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6 in Las Vegas, and should the Mexican phenom be victorious in his venture, then all attention will once again turn to a potential showdown between he and GGG.

For now, though, all of the focus is on Saturday night and GGG taking on Jacobs. Be sure to stay here on this page for updates as the fight takes place from New York City.
